Oh great, looks exactly like Karmic and every Gnome desktop that has ever existed. Isn't it fun to wait a year for something that looks exactly the same as it did in 2004? Linux is the best. Obvious sarcasm. I'm switching back to Windows. I'm very sick of having the same look over and over. I look like a geek going into a Starbucks, or a moron using a buggy dock that doesn't belong on Linux in the first place. 2000 is over, Windows 95 and Windows 98 and Windows ME and Windows 2000 is over. A new wallpaper doesn't do it for me. You can't just make a theme for Ubuntu and call it "A new modern theme for Ubuntu!" when the only thing different is something black. I love using a default theme on an operating system, so I don't fel like a moron. But hey, I can't do that for Linux. Oh, no, I need something different.
People complaining about the gui are brainless morons. I don't spend hours looking are my taskbar and menu colors, if ubuntu 10.04 would be better in performance, but has a pink unchangeable gui, i'd take it
Gnome is seriously lacking in an attractive GUI, and KDE is rather unstable in comparison (and Kubuntu is a secondary distro - all the primary development going on is on ubuntu).
It's such a shame to see it look so obsolete, yeah I'm familiar with themes, but this brown-ass poo ubuntu doesn't cut it anymore - especially not when windows 7 is out.
I hope canonical will put more effort into Kubuntu as I see KDE the future (unless something radically good is happening to gnome) when it comes desktop GUI on linux.... both right now both are inferior to the GUI of either xp, vista or 7.
Why are we complaining about something that you get for free? People can be so lazy. Ubuntu is giving you a plate. All you have to do to use it to your desire. Don't be a winger and appreciate what it has done to you. And please stop comparing one with the other linux. They are both good in their own right. And forget about os where you have to pay to complain about. This is not the place to do that. Go to their blog if they have one?
It took years and years of hard work by legions of engineers to create this marvel of technology which is my $300 netbook. Of course, the whole goal of this enterprise is to please us by bringing us the "new look" every time we get new os. How dare they relase new version of ubuntu without new color scheme and wallpaper!
On a serious note, anybody with more than one brain cell can fully customize their linux experience. It's about your individuality, so take your personal computer back and make it reflect your personality! It is not Canonical's job, it's yours. You have the tools (compiz, cairo-dock, emerald, kde, gnome, xface, etc.).
Of course, if you are an obedient member of worldwide consumer culture, feel free to join the army of spoon-fed clones (you do have a false choice between Bill and Steve).
I too would not mind Canonical spending a bit more time on a more modern and up to date theme, but perhaps they have their hands full with devolping under the hood. Everytime I install a new version of Ubuntu I install the infinity theme as it makes it look nice and modern and sleek.
Would be nice to have a theme like that as the default though.
What I really do dig even in 9.10 is the grey icons in the top system tray. Looks very sleek and see they have kept it in 10.4
The new GUI will have this upgrade people: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2009/12/lucid-to-get-aero-style-rgba.html
Also, the default theme, interaction and notifications will be largely more content-focused for easy access to everything. Some articles have said it rivals Mac GUI. Whether that's the case or not, that's a good sign.
pls use xfce4+ with compiz, just a theme only ma why bother? i run my ubuntu 9.10 with xfce4, compiz, with emarald, which consume low memory spaces gnome "eat" too much of memory spaces, and load slow too......
and window vista GUI also same with window 7 GUI.....
so for me, microsoft window is for work, linux is for personal use!
I don't know how any of you can even compare Ubuntu 9.04 to windows 7 much less 10.04. I've used both and linux still beats windows hands down and anyone that knows anything about a computer knows that. All of windows 7's new features have been available through ubuntu for decades. It's windows that's behind the times. The default background of Ubuntu may be bland but if you can right click a foto and select "set as desktop background" you have no business using linux in the first place. So bottom line, your negative comments are transparent and just show your ignorance.
One tip for everyone that's complaining about design issues.
install emerald, install gnome-do, install wallpaper-tray, enable desktop effects, and be happy. You'll have a nice-looking, wallpaper-changing, easy-handled desktop machine.
I bet you can do something similar with windows, but i also bet it won't be this easy.
> Matrobiva: puoi personalizzarlo come piĆ¹ ti piace. (You can customize whatever you like)
> Anonymous: Come on, you chose an operating system just because of its default theme? How smart!!! I thought the operating systems were done just as a basic software that communicates with your hardware and permits you to launch applications. Moreover, ubuntu can be completely customized either with default included themes/styles either with optional stuff easily installable from the official repository.
But of course, we all have different tastes, if you like windows just because any release has a different theme you are free to buy and use it, I also like and use windows for some purposes (not the GUI) and OSX as well... still you shouldn't write so poor and pointless comments. Your argument is invalid.
Linux is sooo much better than windoze, 1st of all its free, and so are most the apps/programs, then its made by a knowledgable community which fix bugs like theres no tomorrow, also the next new releases fly out every year. its always (ALWAYS) had a more powerfull GUI, and way more customizable then windoze, fact: windoze doesn't even permit you to change theme other than the ones installed by microsoft, you have to patch system files cheers m$ :/
only thin m$ has over linux is good ole' photoshop :( still waiting for thw wine release which can do ps cs4.
I donno why some people attracted towards themes and backgrounds, in real that doesn't make any sense, I like improvements in kernel and its hardware support and packages comes within,I use Ubuntu to finish my daily task, try to work with operating system's packages and tools to make your innovative projects, customize Ubuntu to work for you !, Those who really make use of computer they probably having linux!, because they know the power of linux and they not play with colors :), what else the Ubuntu can do for me, it has done more than enough... At every release i look for improvements in packages, and i like default theme "human"... on any version of Ubuntu i choose this default theme due to its simplicity. In simple Gimp and photo shop has more colors so for those who like themes and colors use this or goto paint shop :)
If one wants eyecandy, switch to Kubuntu. And I don;t know how one can prove Linux is better than Windows. Linux is free but you must ask yourself why millions of dollars are spent on purchasing Windows OS each year :)
Publicity? I have never seen any Linux distro advertised on tv, have you? Because it's on the telly people behamaybe the fact that it comes installed on your machine when you buy one? of course the cost of the license is included in the final price and the vendors get their cut, is it the same 3% of £700 than 3% of £600? the license alone is 100£!!!
So i wanted to say something too, first OS i used was win95 it was in 90's then win98 winNT, winXP and latest was win7. first time contact with linux i had in 2009 february. it was ubuntu interpid 8.1. to be honest i hated it cos it remainded my the old DOS and i didnt like commands etc. after few months playing with interpid and deaper understnding im really happy to have it on my hdd. today when im bored dont have anything to do saturday or sunday then i seat down with my ubuntu and everytime i enter i learn many new things to be honest i really like ubuntu and first time i used it was just year ago. windows is for people who dont have time and dont want to bother to learn new things. i use windows for watching tv write letter and send email. ubuntu use when want to discover something new today i spend much more time using ubuntu then using windows shame that im 34 years old and first time i heard about ubuntu and tried was just year ago.
dude how can u say lucid lynx is the same, gnome 3 is completely different, there only activities ,no bottom taskbar and multiple windows ,how is that the same?
tbh atm win 7 dousnt support multimonitor streching in the way ubuntu doess, appart from that i havnt seen windows throw my windows around in the screensaver something ubuntu can.
for graphical splendor id suggest vista and dreamscenes animated wallpapaers ^_^lol rather you then me!
greets somebody who actualy made his own theme for ubuntu!
Newsflash: Ubuntu doesn't attract it's users with it's GUI. This should not surprise anyone. If you are looking for something that will look chic at starbux please go to M$ or Apple... Ubuntu is geared toward people who want stability, power, and the ability to customize. That's right THE ABILITY TO CUSTOMIZE. If your GUI is that important you can enable all sorts of fun desktop effects and organizing software. Granted it's a waste of time (and RAM), but it's all waiting for you on this fancy internet thing that Ubuntu utilizes so well.
All your comments show WHY Linux haven't become a success. You linux "nerds" may like a computer with a Windows 3.11 look and feel, and you probably love spending HOURS fixing and customizing the look of your window enviroment. But what about all the others that DONT want to spend all that time getting a nice look on their screens?
Should the Linux world be just for the geeks? Or do you want linux to be an alternative to Apple and Windows, a fair and free alternative for ALL people? Then you have to give up your "von-oben" attitude towards the ordinary computer user. Perhaps a lot of you rather prefer Linux (defined as os AND gui) to be an OS just for yourself, the self-declared "elite" users. At least you that don't show respect to other peoples opinions by calling them "dumbass" when they express their thoughts.
Ubuntu was at first a (and perhaps _the_ first) user-friendly linux alternative, a fact that made it's first success. Now, in order to continue expand and involve more users it HAS to improve its looks and feels, eg GUI, and it has to look nice out-of-the box.
Earlier when I started up my Linux laptop at the university, people got curious and wanted to now more about this strange and unfamiliar OS. But nowadays their reaction to Ubuntus shitty brown look is often "is it windows 95?".
So open your eyes and ears to the world OUTSIDE your little elite world and realize that something has to be done about the Ubuntu out-of-the-box-gui.
As for the previous comment, I don't think anyone's trying to attack the Windows/Apple majority here. We're simply pointing out that it's incredibly dumb to judge Ubuntu 10.04 over looks...no one, and I repeat NO ONE is looking to linux for a flashy GUI yet, it's not important. What's important is power, speed, knowledge, and flexibility. It's opensource, enough said. In fact, for the majority of people who DO use linux, the simple GNOME interface is a welcome change of pace. And on top of that, who wants another Windows? We already have one...
So you and every other whining computer user can shut up and go back to complaining to Bill Gates/Steve Jobs, k? Windows and Apple have their jobs in the computer community, linux has it's own.
As a side note, I've used almost every Windows released (including DOS), a few Mac OSX editions, and many Linux distros...just to let you know my OS background knowledge.
here we have a bunch of people whining like children cause the screen is still brown. as i recall ubuntu is in principal designed to be relatively stable free to anyone who wants use it. free to be modified to suit who ever's needs. if you dont like the color dont use it or modify it as YOU the end user sees fit. remember unlike microsoft canonical wont put you in jail for modding their software. you want a reason to complain look at the prices of other OS's some are based on linux and STILL charge. here i can get free USABLE community support without having to shell out my cash. i dont give a crap what color the home screen is its better than paying for support that expires every 5 years. and if you think windows 7 is so great think again when you drop close to $300 for the ultimate edition and only get 1 year of ms support.
http://studiotwentyone.files.wordpress.com/2007/07/test7.jpg have a look at this. these are several versions that look FAR better than ANY pay OS i have seen..optional GUI's which may NEVER exist in redmond, wa. like this one in mint 8 you have the option to set the open window on fire with a burning effect when you close it how cool is that..
i'd just like to say to all those out there using windows, i myself have used all the versions of windows that were ever released...but in less than a year, linux(ubuntu)gave me a whole new perspective when it comes to computing. You just cannot compare the flexibility of ubuntu to windows.Get it(afterall its free),try it(and if you're too lazy or biased to try it,meet someone who knows how to use it)...and see for yourself. We don't need a better wallpaper,or why should we go about doing thesame thing that Windows & Mac are doing?...let em do their thing and we'll do ours,oh,before i forget, i just tried out the new win7,..and,most of what i'm seeing here,i've already experienced them on Ubuntu.
I Just upgraded from 9.10 no issues and so far I'm loving it. Webmin detected the OS as Debian Linux 6.0 Network cards working Cron jobs working My scrips are working Video card working NFS mounting

If you don;t like it you can just go away. Your welcome to come back whenever you want to join the party. We will still be here, quietly making the OS and applications better for us.
Seriously. Don't worry about it nobody is forcing you to use Linux:)
You weenies need to stop whining about themes, whats more important, a good lookin-resource using os, or a sleek, fast, FREE oh wait FREE!! os that dosent hog up all your resources just to run? Vista=1gb of memory to run all its "just in case you need it" crap, and I mean crap (like search indexing that forever spins and spins your hd wearing it out as fast as possible, sure you can disable it but what a pain), Ubuntu, written by people, for everyone to use for free, is designed for running the programs you have the os for in the first place, if you cant live without all the pretty gadgets, transparencies, you can install them and download themes from other users--who also made them for free-- but I guess Google-ing "ubuntu themes" is too much work too?
