On UDS-L they decided that Gimp will be removed from default installation of next coming Ubuntu 10.04 The Lucid Lynx, OMG!
For You who don't know Gimp is a free software graphics editor, AKA windows Photoshop.
They said:
Over three posts I'll present the main ideas and discussions from these meetings: Whittling the default game selection down, removing GIMP from default installs & what best to use for photo-editing and the (slightly odd) decision to potentially include PiTiVi as a default application in Lucid Lynx...
And they all based on this "funny" facts:
- the general user doesn't use it - I use it, and am general user.
- its user-interface is too complex - lol!
- it's an application for professionals - so what?
- desktop users just want to edit photos and they can do that in F-Spot - what is F-Spot?, I don't use this program they should remove it instead Gimp.
- it's a photoshop replacement and photoshop isn't included by default in Windows... - This is Ubuntu not windows, it should be different and not same.
- it takes up room on the disc - then use DVD and no CD...
They are are making a mistake I cant say that!

No, I have to disagree - GIMP is a specialist tool and it's eating up a lot of CD space.
There's a big advantage to keeping Ubuntu on a single CD install instead of a DVD. Older machines, for starters.
If you need GIMP it's just an apt-get away.
I don't mind if they remove the Gimp from Ubuntu, as long as they find an MS Paint equivalent, such as XPaint or GPaint since this *is* one of the killer apps that made Windows that bit more comfortable...
...what was that? Ubuntu doesn't have one? Well then, keep the Gimp! The single window interface has made things drastically easier for the non-photo specialists.

What about adding annotations? Windows had MS Paint *and* Windows Imaging (which was a Kodak-based app) to insert text and line drawings in to photos.
Somehow, I can see various spin-offs coming from Ubuntu Lucid in the near future...
Dude, it is not that bad. Remember that this is business. It is true that most people do not use it. I do not, I have not use it in a while, and the truth is that all I need is minimal image manipulation of photos. I have to agree with Jim.
The point "its user-interface is too complex" deserve more attention than a simple "lol"... in fact, the gimp's interface IS complex, I hope you would agree with this. So, just to make an example, if a general user has to add a red arrow on a photo, would you suggest him to use the gimp? I won't, but then, what should he use on a ubuntu standard install?
So read the fine prints.
Gimp isn't "removed" from Lucid Lynx. It is removed... from the CD.
I use Inkscape much more then GIMP. It isn't on the CD. But it will still be in Lucid.
Like GIMP.
Doesn't F-Spot take up more space when you include that it depends on mono ?
I'm pleased they are taking out gimp. I prefer the standard os to come with just minimal programs installed. this gives the user the opportunity to choose the programs they want and saves bandwidth and work. I vote for mtpaint a fast and easy to use graphics editor which handles 99% of image manipultation very easily. If I need gimp later its a piece of cake to download.

Most people opposing removing the Gimp, mainly do so because they want to make sure people who *would* use it will still find it quickly.
One solution to this, which would also help people find all the other awesome software we have to offer, is going beyond just having recommended options in the package manager, but introducing people to them when they first open the desktop. I did these working html mockups in the Web Browser Widget on Kubuntu, but the same idea would apply equally to Ubuntu. This is almost completely implemented already just in the mockup and could just use apt-url. It also introduces people to more excellent software based on their interests, which we need to do anyway, and lets us free space on the disk at the same time. Win-win-win. :)

GIMP, to remove it from the CD because it was not collectedq which would hinder users with oider computers!
Gee, I wonder in who century you live, not to have a computer with a DVD recorder!
People now to Mass shopping PC,s with Blue Ray optical drive, and You cut your software! Well You must use s Gramophone record, for recording the next version of Ubuntu! :)
Maybe add a menu category of "recommended" but uninstalled. When a user clicks on the link, they get a pop-up that says: This software is recomended for but is not installed by default. Would you like to install it now? "No" button closes the window. "Yes" button installs the application.
