How To Fix Problems With Xorg And nVidia Drivers In Ubuntu 10.04

A You may notice with new Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx come new version of Xorg, and with new Xorg comes new problems.

The old nVidia 185 are incompatible with the newest Xorg.

The 195 beta nVidia drivers work with newest Xorg.

*195 drivers are beta, You are installing them at Your own risk...

First, You need to add the Nvidia Vdpau Team PPA to our package sources. Open up a Terminal and type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa

Next type:

sudo apt-get update

After that, You need to installt the nvidia-glx-195 and nvidia-195-modaliases packages:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-195 nvidia-195-modaliases

When it's done restart computer, after that open again terminal and run:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

And You're done.

Thanks for the tip, but it somehow went wrong for me, so I removed the 195 driver from the PPA and ran the OEM driver install script for 190. Not good. (still need to check the xorg.log to be more specific.) Now going to try the OEM install script for 195-beta ...

I'm still booting into Ubuntu's Video Error Screen where you get the options to failsafe boot with low-res or detect new hardware, etc. If I select exit to console, login, and type startx I'm up & running beautifully - so I'm not sure what the disconnect is between the boot process and X that continues to result in the Video Error Screen when I have solved the problem with the new 195 drivers.

Your link, after adding the PPA, points to nothing.....Terminal error "Couldn't find package nvidia-glx-195", also not available in Synaptic

This works for me too... however, with nvidia 190 and 195 came new problems too ;)
No more HDMI-audio for us with ION-chipsets and *sigh* we either forget digital audio or we stay forever at 9.10... This was a real dissapointment to me just buying my ION-board 2 weeks ago and looking forward to vdpau and the latest mythbuntu.
Oh well, I'd better whine to either nvidia or xorg (or both) ;)

I'm using a Sony VAIO VPCCW13FB, and I have a blank screen when I try to use nvidia latest drive (195.36.15).
I'm very disappointed because this problem exists a very long time and nothing was realy made to solve.
I'll go back to M$ Windows 7, until this pronlem bo solved.

HDMI audio still works on ION chipsets using the 190 and 195 driver, you just have to ummute the device.

I have to ask a question.. This is driving me CRAZY!!!
I am on a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 with NO proprietary drivers, and everything just works great (I can live without the 3d desktop effects, it was laggy the last time i tried it anyways..).
I have unmuted the HDMI Spdif option in alsamixer in Terminal but there is NO sound output through HDMI to my reciever whatsoever.. I even chose the HDMI profiles available in sound preferences, and I got nothing..

Can you guys PLEASE help me with an EASY and straightforward answer to this? Im so sick of hunting the net without any answers..

I have wondered whether the HDMI sound wouldn`t work without the proprietary drivers, but that`s wrong, right? It wouldn`t be listed and recognized if it didn`t work?

Thanks a LOT for any answers that can help me, or a link to a helpful site that could help me. I am just so SICK of the sound not coming out and having to have the HDMI for video and a separate analog cable for sound :S

My machine is an EEEpc 1201N with ION chipset.

Thanks again :) Have a great one
